Entrance to the Underworld
For ancient Mayans it was believed that cenotes were portals to Xibalba, the underworld.
The lore was easy to believe while diving at Dos Ojos Cenote in Quintana Roo, as limestone formations jutted as tall as buildings and ocassionally took the shape of hands and faces, be it either in welcome or warning.
